Transformational Digital Bioinformatics Platform Honored by ACT-IAC

Washington, DC, April 26, 2016. Recognized for transformational innovation in government IT, the Biomedical Research Informatics Computing System (BRICS), a project led by the Center for Information Technology with the National Institutes of Health with collaboration by Sapient Government Services has been recognized as a finalist in the 2016 ACT-IAC Igniting Innovation Awards. Showcasing existing technologies that have the greatest impact, disruptive capabilities, and transformational applications, the awards are given to the best overall innovations in government. 

“As a disease-agnostic, comprehensive, digital bioinformatics platform, BRICS is changing the future of health research,” stated Prasad Bhalerao, Federal Health Director at Sapient Government Services. “Adaptable and scalable to meet the needs of varied research communities, BRICS is bringing visibility to vast amount of complex data. We are honored by the recognition and eager to continue our efforts supporting Federal health organizations in building collaborative digital platforms.”

As the volume of biomedical research data increased exponentially, it became crucial to have a way to standardize, aggregate, and share this data. Government spearheaded the development of BRICS, a customizable bioinformatics system designed for every stage of research. With the flexibility of plug-and-play modules, BRICS makes the performance of research studies and clinical trials faster, simpler and more collaborative. Accelerating the timeline from research and discovery to treatements that improve lives, BRICS has been customized as the foundation for research specific to traumatic brain injury, Parkinson’s Disease, ocular disease and Global Rare Diseases.

“Igniting Innovation was designed not only to recognize the brightest minds in government IT problem solving but also to showcase their ideas and successes,” said Andrew Robinson, chair of ACT-IAC’s Institute for Innovation. Narrowed down to 40 finalists from 147 submissions, BRICS was showcased at the Igniting Innovation Showcase and Expo, an educational forum featuring the “best of the best,” hosted by ACT-IAC on April 25, 2016. ACT-IAC is The American Council for Technology and Industry Advisory Council, the premier public-private partnership in the government IT community.
